The resurgence of Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag is underway! It turns out that the couple’s 15 minutes of fame was far from up after The Hills ended in 2010. In fact, 2025 brought Pratt and Montag back into the spotlight — although it came amid the loss of their home in the California wildfires. Despite the tragedy, Pratt used his sense of humor to go viral on social media, helping to revive his wife’s music career in the process.

While Pratt and Montag live a relatively normal life with their two kids these days, they previously had plenty of ups and downs in the public eye over the years. From their peak reality television days to almost going broke, the former MTV stars have been through quite a bit.

2006

Pratt and Montag found love in a hopeless place when they first met in a nightclub in 2006. Pratt was admittedly hoping to get cast on Montag’s show The Hills when he showed up to Privilege with pal Brody Jenner.

The duo went public with their relationship on Season 2 of The Hills, which premiered in early 2007 and was filmed months earlier.

An article claiming that Montag’s former BFF Lauren Conrad and her ex-boyfriend Jason Wahler made a sex tape went viral online. This was the catalyst for the next several seasons of The Hills after Conrad accused Pratt of starting the rumor and ended her friendship with Montag when she didn’t do anything to stop him.

Conrad and Wahler have insisted that no sex tape exists. In 2015, Pratt confirmed that he started the rumor, but he and Montag have maintained that they believe there is a tape.

An episode of The Hills showed Pratt proposing to Montag during a trip to Santa Barbara, although the two later confirmed that he had only given her a promise ring — not a real engagement ring — at the time.

The couple eloped during a trip to Mexico, which was documented on Season 4 of The Hills. Although Montag dreamed of a fairy tale wedding, Pratt explained to Us Weekly, “I was just putting it out there, how easy it would be with no drama. It was exactly the wedding I wanted.”

2010

The reality stars filed for separation with Montag admitting that she “needed space” after “so many lies” were spread about her. The following month, she amended her request and filed for divorce. At the time, Pratt insinuated that the marriage was fake, telling PEOPLE, “I love Heidi but our marriage was a show. It was part of the Hills world.”

By September 2010, the couple had reconciled and confirmed that they were back together. They renewed their wedding vows that November.

In a 2011 interview, the duo admitted that they faked the breakup for money. “We were all getting paid to be people we weren’t for so long that you stop — there’s no line,” Pratt told The Daily Beast. “The gauge is gone. The gray area is gone. We got so deep with how many storylines we had to do to continue the machine.”

Pratt and Montag have been open about their irresponsible spending habits following their reality television fame. After squandering millions of dollars, they were able to build their fortune back up by curbing their spending habits and briefly moving into Pratt’s parents’ vacation home in Santa Barbara and living rent-free. Subsequent reality television ventures on shows like Celebrity Big Brother, Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, and The Hills: New Beginnings also helped.

Pratt and Montag welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Gunnar.

“No words will ever be able to describe this miraculous moment of life! I have never been so full of love, joy, gratitude, faith, and euphoria,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “The deepest love I have ever felt. So blessed to have a beautiful healthy baby @gunnerpratt. Thank you God! Thank you @spencerpratt for being my rock and cheerleader.”

Montag gave birth to the couple’s second child, a son named Ryker. They conceived the baby after dealing with fertility issues, which resulted in Montag having a hysteroscopic polypectomy procedure to remove non-cancerous uterine polyps.

January 2025

Pratt and Montag lost their Pacific Palisades home during the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025. Amid the devastation and destruction, Pratt urged fans to stream his wife’s 2010 album, Superficial, to help support their family financially during the trying time. His pleas worked as the album and title track skyrocketed to No. 1 on the charts.

Fans began begging for a new reality show that documented the pair rebuilding their lives after the tragedy.
