[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Ransom Canyon Season 1.]

Yancy Grey’s (Jack Schumacher) cowboy hat is full of secrets. The Ransom Canyon character rolled into town looking to make a quick buck and skedaddle, but he ultimately found the family and love he’s been yearning for his entire life.

He fell fast and hard for Ellie Estevez (Marianly Tejada) and even proposed to her after Cap Fuller’s (James Brolin) death. Yancy just forgot to mention one small thing: He’s already married. At Gracie’s Dance Hall, Ellie ran into a woman looking for her husband, who happened to be Yancy! While Ellie was getting the shock of her life, Yancy was waiting for Ellie at the altar. (Awkward.)

So, where do Yancy and Ellie go from here? Can they get past this latest roadblock? If Yancy’s already married, would his wedding to Ellie (if it happened) have been legal? “You’re asking a great question that I’ve also asked,” Schumacher told Swooon. “Look, I want as many answers as you do. This stuff keeps me up at night.”

The actor admitted that Yancy not mentioning his secret wife is a “pretty big thing to overlook.” He added, “I’m certainly in the dog house. I’m going to have a lot of work to do to get out of the situation. But I think the love for Ellie is really there, and Yancy wants that. He wants that relationship, he wants this community, and he wants that family. And for him, that’s Ellie. I think he’s going to do whatever he can to make that happen, and it’s going to take a lot of work to get her back on his side.”

Schumacher acknowledged that Yancy’s “con man” past is part of the reason why the character kept such a huge secret. “I think it’s just second nature, but that’s the whole thing,” he explained. “When he arrives in the town, he’s trying to change his past, and he’s trying to start new and fresh, turn over a new leaf, which is obviously difficult, and his demons come back to haunt him.”

He added, “I mean, in life, why does anyone lie? It’s to try and protect yourself or protect someone else. Obviously, it’s always better to tell the truth, but you kind of dig yourself into these situations, and especially when there’s something like this connection with Ellie that he wants to hold onto.”

Viewers only saw the back of Mrs. Grey’s head when she came face-to-face with Ellie. Showrunner April Blair explained why Yancy’s wife’s face wasn’t shown, but Schumacher’s “had some thoughts” about who to cast.

Yancy’s got major romantic woes weighing on his shoulders, as well as the future of Fuller Ranch. Since he’s the sole heir as the only child of Cap’s son, Lincoln Fuller, Yancy will likely take the reins on the ranch. With the ranch drama coming to a head and the pressure of his family’s legacy, is Yancy ready to take it all on in a potential Season 2?

“I think there’s a lot of guilt still around it, and I think that he feels like he’s got a lot to prove and earn to be a part of that,” Schumacher said. “But I think that ultimately, yes, he is ready. It’s that fighting for what you want and and what you believe in. I think that there’s the old life of running around and conning and all these sorts of things, but Yancy wants that chapter to close.”
