[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Call the Midwife Season 14 Episode 1.]

Call the Midwife staged an exit for one character with an engagement in its Season 14 premiere on Sunday, March 30, but it also planted the seeds for a new romance to bloom. This new pairing between Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) and Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) won’t be without its complications. Cyril is still married!

The episode marked a new beginning for Megan Cusack‘s Nancy Corrigan and Conor O’Donnell‘s Roger Noble. The pair got engaged in the episode following the start of their romance in the 2024 Christmas special. Cusack confirmed her upcoming exit from the series while Call the Midwife Season 14 was airing in the U.K. earlier this year. Cusack will reportedly be seen again in Season 14, but her presence will be far less than usual after her character informed the women of Nonnatus House that she accepted a new job offer in the Season 14 premiere. Between wedding planning and preparing for her new life with Roger and her daughter, Colette (Francesca Fullilove), Nancy will be largely absent this season.

Enter Rosalind and Cyril, with whom sparks flew in the Season 14 opener. This comes after they first connected in the 2024 holiday special. Cyril is now working as a social worker in Poplar in Season 14, and Rosalind is continuing her work as a nurse and pupil midwife. They crossed paths at the council offices when Rosalind was there to deliver paperwork. Cyril said they were looking for volunteer assistance with the homeless shelter, and both of them seemed excited by the idea of spending more time together. After a difficult birth on the Isle of Dogs made Rosalind break down due to stress later in the episode, Cyril was there to comfort her.

Fans will recall that Cyril (who first appeared in Season 8) is married to former Nonnatus midwife Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott). After a long courtship, Cyril and Lucille got married in Season 11. Lucille also experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage that season. Elliott left the series in Season 12, her exit being explained by having Lucille decide to move back to Jamaica. The pair worked through the difficult times with the miscarriage, but now are living separately as Cyril stays in Poplar.

According to reports from U.K. outlets, Rosalind and Cyril will continue to get closer throughout the season. Could this mean that Cyril and Lucille’s marriage is ending? Questions about his relationship status are sure to be raised as the season presses on.

In Call the Midwife Season 14 Episode 2, Trixie (Helen George) cares for a single mother recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital. An outbreak of gonorrhea sees Shelagh (Laura Main) and Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) using the Council’s new tracing system to identify contacts for testing and treatment.
