‘The Housemaid’ Movie: Everything We Know About the Book-to-Film Adaptation
The Housemaid put author Freida McFadden on the map after its release in 2022. Following the thriller’s success, producer Todd Lieberman got the rights to the film through Hidden Pictures, in partnership with Lionsgate.
The ball got rolling pretty quickly when it came to making the movie. Casting updates were made in October 2024, followed by the news of the movie’s expected release date just two months later. Scroll down for everything we know about the movie.
When is The Housemaid coming out?
The Housemaid is set for a Christmas 2025 release. The movie is slated to hit theaters on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
The Housemaid cast
The movie has a star-studded main cast, with Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone topping the bill (more information on their roles further down).
Of the decision to cast Seyfried and Sweeney in the leading female roles, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s president said in a statement, “They’re both mysterious, nuanced and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away.”

Indiana Elle is also a confirmed cast member, although the details on her part are unclear at this time. She revealed her casting news after sitting courtside with Sweeney at a Brooklyn Nets game in January 2025. “Cat’s out of the bag!” she wrote on Instagram afterwards. “EPIC night out with my amazing costar in @housemaidmovie @sydney_sweeney and @brooklynnets and @nyknicks at @barclayscenter . Still buzzing!”
Paul Feig, known for working on films like Bridesmaids and A Simple Favor, is directing the film. “It’s happening!” he wrote on Instagram in October 2024. “So excited to bring this great book by @fmcfaddenauthor to life on the big screen with @sydney_sweeney and @mingey and my pals at @lionsgate and @hiddenpicturesmedia. Millie is on her way.”
McFadden was thrilled with the casting choices. “I can’t even express how excited I am to announce that #TheHousemaidMovie is coming soon!!!” she gushed. “@Lionsgate has come up with the absolute perfect cast and director, and I am just so grateful! I mean, Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Paul Feig … mind blown!!!!”
What is The Housemaid about?
The Housemaid is the story of a struggling young woman named Millie (Sweeney) who becomes a housemaid for a wealthy couple, Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew (Sklenar). She soon learns that they are keeping secrets “far more dangerous than her own.”
Morrone’s character is Enzo, a landscaper who works for the family and has a mysterious past of his own. In The Housemaid book, Millie and Enzo develop a close relationship while they’re both working for the Winchesters.
Is there a Housemaid sequel?
While there have been no movie sequels confirmed at this time, The Housemaid is not a standalone book. In fact, McFadden wrote two sequels following Millie’s character after her time with the Winchesters: The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching. The series also features a short story, The Housemaid’s Wedding.
