Guy Gansert may not have been the one to end up with Joan Vassos on Season 1 of The Golden Bachelorette, but his appearance on the show has led to another exciting opportunity. Vassos’ runner-up’s next career move was announced on Friday, March 7.

Gansert is a retired emergency room doctor, and he picked up another exciting television gig following his run on The Golden Bachelorette. Could it be The Golden Bachelor?!

On March 12, Gansert will guest star on an episode of ABC’s General Hospital. He will play a wildlife journalist named Geoffrey in the long-running soap opera despite having no previous acting experience.

Gansert told PEOPLE that he used to watch General Hospital in college and made a joke to a Bachelor Nation producer about having the chance to be on the “well-respected” series one day.

“I said [it] in — kinda — jest,” he explained. “Within a couple of weeks, I received an email Zoom invitation with [EP] Frank Valentini and [Vice President of Production and Administration at ABC Daytime, Disney ABC Television Group] Dominick Nuzzi. After a 30-minute Zoom interview, they loved the idea of a real ER doctor who made it to the final two of The Golden Bachelorette. A month later, I received an offer to be on a small one-day episode.”

The divorced father of four wasted no time saying yes. “This is all happening after deciding to hang up my stethoscope and retire after 35 years,” he pointed out. Gansert also gushed over the cast and crew of the show, who he said “put [him] at ease” while he was filming.

“They were all welcoming,” Gansert shared. “There was definitely a sense of family amongst all staff. It was one of the most fun things I have done. They made me feel special.” Although he only booked a one-episode appearance, he’s hopeful that he could return in the future. “Before I went on the show, I was happy just to have one chance to see what it’s like behind the scenes. Now, I had so much fun, and I feel like I could take being comfortable in front of a camera to a more relaxed and excellent level.”
