‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Paul Wesley Reveals True Feelings About Stefan & Caroline’s Romance

Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder had an epic The Vampire Diaries reunion while going head-to-head in the Hot Ones challenge. The former onscreen brothers asked each other tough questions, and if they didn’t answer, they had to eat a super spicy chicken wing.
Right off the bat, Somerhalder threw a question at Wesley about the supernatural teen drama, which they starred on from 2010 to 2017. “Name one storyline you think should’ve never made it out of the writers’ room,” Somerhalder prompted.
Wesley didn’t really have to hesitate. “After Nina [Dobrev] left the show, they were like, ‘We need to pair [my character] Stefan with some romantic partner, and then Stefan and Caroline (Candice King) ended up having a wedding and getting married,” he said.
Somerhalder agreed that the Steroline wedding and romance overall was “a little forced,” but both guys still said it was “cute.” The Lost alum added, “She’s pretty, you’re pretty.”
Stefan and Caroline were close friends before getting together romantically in Season 7, and many fans preferred their platonic chemistry over their romantic relationship. Last year, Wesley attended the Forever Mystic Falls Fan Meet 3 and opened up about why he felt the Steroline romance was “forced.”
“[Nina] was gone and then they wanted to find a love interest … it was okay, but I really liked them being friends, so, I don’t know. It’s okay. But I think I prefer the original storylines from Seasons 1 and 2,” he shared.
The two got married in the penultimate episode of the series, but it was short-lived. In the finale, Stefan ultimately sacrificed himself and died so Damon (Somerhalder) and Elena (Dobrev), who returned for the show’s final episode, could be together.
Wesley and Somerhalder have maintained a close friendship since The Vampire Diaries ended in 2017. However, the Hot Ones challenge was all about the competition, and in the end, Wesley was declared the winner.
