‘When Calls the Heart’: Kevin McGarry & Erin Krakow’s Major Change to Nathan and Elizabeth’s Love Story
It’s no secret that Kevin McGarry and Erin Krakow care about their characters’ relationship on When Calls the Heart. Now that Nathan and Elizabeth are finally together and thriving, the actors want to make sure they’re getting every moment right.
In a post-episode interview, McGarry revealed that he and Krakow pushed for a notable change in Nathan and Elizabeth’s love story during a particular scene in Season 12.
During Season 12 Episode 7’s “Dance the Night Away,” Nathan and Elizabeth go undercover as a married couple named Danny and Diana DiMarco. Like a scene straight out of The Great Gatsby, they get all dolled up while acting as double agents. The characters also sing “You Made Me Love You,” but that track wasn’t the original song in the script. McGarry and Krakow actually stepped in to change what was in the script.

“‘For Me and My Gal’ was the original one, and then Erin and I talked… it was too fast,” McGarry said on The Edify Show. “We wanted one that was a bit slower. And we wanted one that was kind of more to Nathan and Elizabeth’s story, so we switched it to ‘You Made Me Love You.'”
For McGarry and Krakow, “You Made Me Love You” felt more in tune with Nathan and Elizabeth’s journey so far. The track was also authentic to the WCTH time period, having been released in 1913. He continued, “They fought this for a long time, and it was already in the stars, so we thought that was a more appropriate song, so we said, ‘Hey, we’re going to sing this one instead.’ And they let us!”
In the interview, McGarry noted the “bold moves” the show took in Season 12. The actor and his costar previously told Swooon that the earlier Season 12 dream sequences when Elizabeth was sick were “a really unique opportunity” to see the characters in “such a different light.”
Season 12 is coming to a close, and the couple (as well as the rest of Hope Valley) will be tested like never before. “There’s a definite decision that is made that alters the course of their future,” McGarry said in our interview.
