Will There Be a ‘Sweethearts’ Season 2? Creator Chris Coelen Reveals His Plans

Are you a reality TV fan but love some teen drama now and again? Well, Sweethearts is the show for you. The new Prime Video series follows six teenage couples in Charleston, South Carolina, as they experience the end of high school and their final summer before the next chapter of their lives begin.
Series creator Chris Coelen, the mastermind behind Love Is Blind, The Ultimatum, and Perfect Match, has continued to expand his resume with Sweethearts, which has a Summer I Turned Pretty meets Laguna Beach feel.
“It’s an area that I’ve been thinking about for a long time because it seems like such a perfect and really fraught moment in people’s lives,” Coelen told Swooon of what inspired the show. “It’s an intense moment where, if you happen to be in a high school relationship, it means everything to so many high schoolers. To figure out what you want to be and what you want to do with your life, and who you want to be with, seems like such an amazing moment all while you’re coming of age is a really incredible moment to document.”
The first season is set in Charleston, which Coelen felt “very Americana in some ways.” Once his team had figured out a location, the Sweethearts cast was fleshed out. “We looked at a lot of places, but ultimately, that was our first choice. Season 2, who knows, it could be coming to a town near you,” he teased.
The show hasn’t been renewed for Season 2 yet, but Coelen is hopeful that Sweethearts will continue to expand. Not only does he want to explore other cities, but he hopes to revisit the original couples from the first season.
“I think it’s interesting to see what happens with them,” he said. “I’m certainly interested to see what happens with the people that we followed. But I think it’s also really nice to go into other places, and so that would be our hope is to maybe do a little bit of both.”
While Sweethearts is clearly aimed at teens today, Coelen believes all ages can enjoy the series. “I think all of us can certainly relate to being a teenager and feeling all of the things that are wrapped up in that,” he explained. “I think young people enjoy watching this. I think anybody who’s been a teenager will enjoy watching it and relate to those issues. I also think because we’ve included the parents, there are different points of view that come into the show. So I think it’s something, hopefully, that’ll appeal to a whole broad section of people.”
