Considering the characters on Lost were trying to survive on a mysterious island, there was little time for romance. However, the show’s writers managed to depict a great television love story between Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) amid the characters’ fight to survive and try to make it home.

There even managed to be some time for a love triangle between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), and while many Lost fans still think Kate belonged with the bad boy, there’s no denying the connection she shared with Jack from the moment the plane crashed.

But after all that they went through, did Jack and Kate make it as a couple? Scroll down for a refresh about what happened to their characters.

Do Jack and Kate end up together on Lost?

Yes. Technically. The finale, which aired in 2010, concluded with Jack and Kate reuniting in the “flash sideways” afterlife, even though they died at different times. The fact that they were able to find each other signifies that they were meant to be and would move on from purgatory since they were finally together again, along with the others from the island who were also reunited with their partners in the afterlife.

In the show’s regular timeline, Jack and Kate escaped the island together and eventually started building a life with each other. They raised Claire’s (Emilie de Ravin) baby, Aaron, together and got engaged. However, things eventually fell apart and they were not able to make it work. Jack struggled after getting back from the island and it led to the demise of his relationship with Kate.

When Jack begged Kate to go back to the island because it was a place that gave him purpose, she refused at first, but eventually gave in so she could try and find Claire for Aaron’s sake. In the final season, Jack became the protector of the island and teamed up with Kate to kill the Man in Black (portrayed in physical form by Terry O’Quinn). They finally got back to being in a good place with each other and shared a final kiss before Jack died by sacrificing himself to save the island. Meanwhile, Kate escaped the island with Sawyer and a few others, presumably going on to live her life back home before reuniting with the love of her life, Jack, in the afterlife.

Who did Sawyer end up with on Lost?

Sawyer also reunited with his soulmate, Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) in the afterlife. In their flash sideways, they met while he was at the vending machine of the hospital where she worked. They shared a kiss as they connected and started recalling flashes of their lives together.

Unfortunately, like Jack and Kate, their relationship in the regular timeline ended a bit more tragically. The two got together in Season 5 after they got stuck on the island when the Oceanic Six was able to escape. As they navigated the shifts through time, they developed a connection. Over the next three years, they became an established couple, but when Jack and Kate returned to the island, it wasn’t long before things started to go completely awry.

While stuck in the 1970s at the end of Season 5, the survivors figured out that if they set off a hydrogen bomb, they could get back to the present day, although it would also prevent everything that happened entirely. Yes, the plane crash and marooning and all the tragedy that followed would have never happened, but this would also mean that they wouldn’t have ever met each other. Although Juliet and Sawyer were on their way to finally getting off the island, they decided to turn back and help Jack set off the bomb. Juliet realized that if she never met Sawyer in the first place, then she’d never have to know what it was like to lose him.

Sadly, that’s exactly what happened, though. The season ended with Sawyer desperate to save Juliet after an electromagnetic event resulted in her being dragged into a pit. She sacrificed herself by letting go of Sawyer and falling into the pit to detonate the bomb herself. Juliet briefly returned in the Season 6 premiere, where the survivors were back in 2007 and she was actually alive. However, she was in bad condition and died in Sawyer’s arms after letting him know that she detonated the bomb so he could go home.

A subsequent episode revealed that Sawyer had been planning to propose to Juliet before she died.
