Why Did ‘The Flip Off’ Stars Christina Haack & Tarek El Moussa Split? Inside Their Divorce
Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa bicker like an old married couple on The Flip Off … and that could be because they almost were one. The exes, who share two children, were married from 2009 to 2018 and are now competing against each other in the house-flipping competition.
While it’s been years since Haack and El Moussa ended their relationship, The Flip Off has sparked questions about what happened between them and where they stand today. Scroll down for everything we know!
Why did Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa split?
Haack and El Moussa announced their separation in December 2016. They had been married for seven years at the time.
“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” they said in a joint statement. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed. During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together.”
El Moussa filed for divorce in January 2017, and it was finalized one year later. However, Haack later confirmed that the two had already been separated for months at the time of their split announcement. She cited a May 2016 incident involving police (more on that below) that made her “realize that us being separated was healthier for both of us.”
Following the divorce, the pair continued to work on their show Flip or Flop together until 2022 before reuniting for The Flip Off.
Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa’s police controversy
In May 2016, Haack called police in tears over fears that her then-husband was suicidal. She revealed that they’d had an argument, after which he fled the home they shared with a gun. “I didn’t necessarily know that we weren’t going to get back together,” Haack told People in 2017. “It was after seeking therapy and trying to work things out that we both realized this is for the best.”
Meanwhile, El Moussa said the situation “really got blown out of proportion” and insisted he was never suicidal. Rather, he said took the gun with him as protection against wildlife while hiking. “There’s mountain lions, bobcats and rattlesnakes and big wildlife back there,” he said on the Today show. “I went out for a hike to scout some trails, it wasn’t even a big deal. I didn’t understand.”
Do Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa get along?
Everything is copacetic in Haack and El Moussa’s relationship today. Haack also gets along great with El Moussa’s now-wife Heather Rae El Moussa. “We don’t fight,” Heather told Us Weekly. “She picks on Tarek all the time, and then I jump in. But he takes it well.” Haack added, “Tarek loves to be teased. When he’s in a bad mood, if you tease him, it lightens him up.”
“The last couple of years we’ve been in a really good place,” El Moussa confirmed. “It took us almost 10 years to get there, so going back into shooting together, it’s a lot more of an intimate relationship. There were some reservations. But as the show has gone on, we’ve realized it’s just business.”
