‘When Calls the Heart’ Stars Tease ‘Intense’ Elizabeth & Nathan Challenge That Will ‘Shatter Their World’
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 6 “When Autumn Leaves Begin to Fall.”]
Everyone gets sick now and again — even Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow). During the February 8 episode of When Calls the Heart, our favorite Hope Valley school teacher suffered from a head cold, which caused her to have some interesting (and very swoonworthy) Nathan-heavy fever dreams.
Krakow told Swooon that the fever dream sequences were a “really unique opportunity” for her and costar Kevin McGarry. “We’ve been playing these characters for many years now, and to get to see them in such a different light was really enjoyable, and hopefully enjoyable for the fans as well.”

The actress pointed out that the scenes include “lots of fun Easter eggs in these dream moments, things that you wouldn’t necessarily notice sprinkled throughout the set design that were fun memories for Nathan and Elizabeth, like a plate of sliced banana bread or a pitcher of apple juice.”
McGarry noted that Nathan taking care of Elizabeth “moves their relationship along into a great place without having to be so romantic.” At the end of the episode, the roles are reversed when Nathan comes down with the cold.
Elizabeth and Nathan have been embracing this next chapter of their romance in Season 12. However, Krakow and McGarry warn there’s a “big” challenge coming for the couple.
“It’s very poignant to the time we are in, 1921, and not only does it shatter their world, it shatters the entire community. It’s an intense thing that happens,” McGarry revealed.
The costars also teased that Elizabeth and Nathan will take the next step in their relationship by the end of the season. “There’s a definite decision that is made that alters the course of their future,” McGarry revealed.
For fans who enjoyed Nathan’s undercover work this season, Krakow dished that Elizabeth and Nathan “have a really fun adventure where the undercover thing comes back in,” and there will be “some musicality and some dance” as well.
