Will There Be a Fifth ‘Bridget Jones’ Movie? Everything We Know So Far
The Bridget Jones franchise began in 2001. Now, 24 years later, the fourth installment has arrived. With plenty of breaks and an evergrowing fanbase, the British rom-com franchise has made Renée Zellweger synonymous with the charismatic (albeit chaotic) main character.
In Mad About The Boy, Bridget once again lures us back into her life. This time around, without the comfort of the uptight yet affable Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), her true love. Juggling being a full-time mom to her two kids, Billy (Casper Knopf) and Mabel (Mila Jankovic), and reentering the workforce, Bridget is trying to also reinvigorate her dire romantic situation.
As Bridget gets back into the dating game, she finds herself in the midst of another love triangle. This time around. neither Darcy nor Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) are vying for her affection. Who does she choose? The young hunk Roxster (Leo Woodall) or the wise, handsome teacher Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor)?
Audiences will find out on Valentine’s Day what her journey exactly looks like moving forward, but fans are already wondering when the fifth chapter will arrive. Is Bridget Jones 5 happening? Here’s what we know.
Is there going to be another Bridget Jones movie?
For those who love Bridget Jones, there will never be enough installments to satisfy the dedicated audience. From its origin as a column for The Independent to a fully-fledged-out movie deal, Bridget Jones was destined to succeed from the start.
There’s been no official announcement about a fifth Bridget Jones movie, but we’re hoping this is not the end of her story. It’s for certain that Bridget is not done causing a ruckus with her shenanigans yet, so please let us in on the fun!
The film series is known for its lengthy time between films. While there was only a two-year wait between Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, there was a 12-year wait for the third film, Bridget Jones’s Baby. It’s been a 9-year wait for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which is based on Helen Fielding’s novel of the same name.
What has Renée Zellweger said about returning?
The Oscar winner has loved being able to step back into Bridget’s shoes over the years. In an interview with The Guardian, she lauded Fielding’s work. “Isn’t that a cool thing that Helen created this character that people want to talk about for 30 years?” she began.
“I think people see themselves in her imperfections, vulnerability and fear. Her authenticity and transparent humanity make it easy for folks to feel that “I know her.”
Zellweger has also made it clear that she would be down for another round. When asked at the premiere if the franchise is coming to a close by BBC, she revealed to be “in denial.” The 55-year-old Texan jokingly emphasized, “Let me live in denial for a little longer.” She also said she has her “fingers crossed” that another film will eventually become reality.
Is there another Bridget Jones book?
Although there is one Bridget Jones book that hasn’t technically been adapted, there are only four in the collection.
Bridget Jones’s Baby was the only movie that wasn’t based on a book. Later on, Fielding did write a novel with a similar premise, but instead of the question being whether Darcy or Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey) was the father, the question was focused around Darcy and Daniel.
Fielding has, however, not ruled out the possibility of writing another one. Mad About The Boy was her most personal book yet. Her husband, Kevin Curran, died in 2016. Zellweger was quick to state her opinion about that link. She said, “It’s a beautiful story and really the most personal for Helen. She is sharing about her own experiences about loss, grief and finding new happiness, it’s a pretty special one.”
