Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal Recreate Iconic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Fake Orgasm Scene in Super Bowl Ad
After decades of begging for a When Harry Met Sally sequel, fans finally got what they wanted.
Sort of.
Ahead of the Super Bowl, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal headed back to Katz’s Deli last December to do another take of that scene. This time around for a Hellmann’s Mayonnaise commercial. And, boy, did they deliver.
Recreating the “I’ll have what she’s having” fake orgasm scene, Ryan took a bite out of her turkey sandwich and wasn’t completely satisfied. But that changed when she added Hellmann’s mayonnaise to it. Crystal, on his end, watched his fictional partner truly enjoying her meal while eating a pastrami sandwich. As she was making those noises, he quipped, “This one’s real.” Crystal also added a new line, “I’m competing with a condiment.”
For those wondering who delivered the iconic follow-up will be pleased to find out that it’s the star of the latest generation of rom-com royalty, Sydney Sweeney. Director Jake Szymanski enjoyed the symbolism. “I like that it was kind of like a mini passing of the torch to the next generation to have her at the end,” he said at the commercial’s premiere, according to THR.
Speaking at the iconic deli, Szymanski shared that Crystal and Ryan “hadn’t been back inside Katz’s since they shot the scene, and so we got to be there for the moment when they both walked on set.” He continued, “They also hadn’t seen each other in a couple years. So we got to see them walk back into this place, and the memories flood back, and they start remembering and sharing stories and talking about what it was like to film that day.” He also revealed that to capture the same look the crew used the same lens Rob Reiner used to get the unique nostalgic touch to the movie.
To celebrate the return of the When Harry Met Sally characters, Hellmann’s and Katz’s will be selling a “What She’s Having” sandwich package, which can be shipped across the country. Included in the deal are all the ingredients for the turkey sandwich featured in the spot, as well as a pastrami sandwich and, of course, Hellmann’s mayo.
