How Long Until the Next Empyrean Novel After ‘Onyx Storm’? All the Latest Updates
Millions of book readers all over the world are experiencing dragon fever with the release of Onyx Storm, the third book in Rebecca Yarros’ highly addictive Empyrean romantasy series. The latest novel set our heroine Violet on the hunt for the mysterious camouflaging dragons that Andarna left behind six hundred years prior and to find a cure for Xaden becoming venin. As her search widened the world of the Empyrean series, greater mysteries were exposed and everything Violet thought she knew about her own upbringing was brought into question.
Onyx Storm, like Iron Flame before it, also ended on a massive cliffhanger that has fans clamoring for more answers. We have two more books left in the series, but what’s going to happen in the last two novels is as unclear as what happened to Violet in the last chapter of Onyx Storm. Luckily, the Fourth Wing TV show is still actively in the works to help tide us over because it seems like we might have to wait a while before we get another update to the Empyrean series. Will there be a fourth book in the Empyrean series?
Yes! Yarros has stated that she has plotted out a five-book plan for the series, so we have at least two more books in the Fourth Wing world on the way.
When will Empyrean Book 4 be released?
That is still to be determined, but don’t expect it within the calendar year — or even in 2026. Yarros has stressed that she needs to take a break after releasing three books in under two years made her physically ill.
She responded to a fan in a comment on a January Instagram post that she hasn’t even started Book 4 yet and is contractually obligated to write a contemporary romance before she starts the next book. So buckle up, we’ve got a lot of time to put theories together about that Onyx Storm ending.
What will Empyrean Book 4 be called?
Since Yarros hasn’t even started writing the fourth book, it’s possible that even she doesn’t know what the next book will be called. Now that we’re three books in, it will probably follow the two-word pattern of the first three books. Some BookTok theorists are predicting the name of the book will be Silver Skies, but we are not going to get that confirmed until much later.
What’s going to happen in Empyrean Book 4?

We’ve got to find out what happened to Violet in the twelve missing hours at the end of Onyx Storm. At least six dragon eggs have been stolen, four riders are missing, and Xaden is gone. Right now, the only person who might know what happened is Imogen, but she erased Violet’s memories because Violet asked her to.
Figuring out what led up to that final chapter will be priority number one when the next book comes out. We also know there’s a traitor among the ranks who joined Xaden on Team Venin after the Draithus battle. Oh, and Violet is Duchess of Tyrrendor now? There’s a lot to uncover in the next novel as the war between channeling magic users and dark wielders continues.
Will anyone die in Empyrean Book 4?
Yarros may not have started writing the fourth book yet, but she has plotted the entire arc of the series. She teased at the Onyx Storm release event at The Novo in Los Angeles, attended by Swooon, that someone we love will not make it through the fourth book. Onyx Storm already took two beloved people from us, and we dread to think if our core four in the Iron Squad won’t keep their word of making it to graduation. For the love of everything holy, let us all pray that she won’t harm Ridoc.
