‘The Couple Next Door’ Cast Reveals Their Characters’ Red & Green Flags (VIDEO)
The Couple Next Door has arrived on Starz and is introducing viewers to two very different relationships set against a suburban background.
Danny (Sam Heughan) and Becka (Jessica De Gouw) are already residing in the neighborhood when Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) move in across the street. While they’re friendly enough upon greeting the move-ins, Danny and Becka’s relationship dynamic isn’t immediately clear on the surface to Evie and Pete, a couple who have been together since university and who are expecting their first baby when the show kicks off.
As the premiere episode unfolds, Evie and Pete begin to notice Danny and Becka hosting other couples, seeing them get a bit close with their unidentified guests. It piques a curiosity that is ramped up in the wake of a major tragedy, hinting at the impending collision between these two couples.

In the meantime, the cast is breaking down their character red and green flags for the series in our video interview, above. For De Gouw, Becka’s green flag is “she’s someone who really advocates for living by your own rules, or your own set of standards that you don’t have to subscribe to expectation, and that there’s a really beautiful life for people who live outside of that, who challenge what society wants you to be or expects you to be.”
That is definitely hinted at the start of the show and will continue to unfold as the season plays out. As for Becka’s red flags? “She’s found herself in a place where [she] and Danny are very disconnected and… her actions and words aren’t necessarily lining up,” De Gouw teases.
Meanwhile, in Heughan’s eyes, Danny’s green flag is his love for Becka. “I mean, self-preservation [is his green flag], but ultimately what he’s trying to preserve is his life with [Becka]… he’s in love with her.” Heughan admits that Danny has more “beige flags or red flags” surrounding his green flag. “The red flag, obviously, is the fact that he is not telling the truth. He’s not as honest as he should be,” he adds.
Viewers see Danny’s dishonesty manifest when he takes on a side job with one of his traffic cop coworkers that gets him wrapped up in some shady business.
Meanwhile, for Tomlinson’s Evie, she says, “I think for Evie the green flag is that she’s fun, and the red flag is that she’s a psychopath,” she adds with a laugh. Although that “psychopath” element hasn’t fully come to light quite yet, it’s something to keep in mind as the series continues to unfold.
As for Evie’s husband, Pete, Enoch says, “I’m trying to think of any green flags for Pete… He’s well-meaning, that hopefully counts for something,” the actor points out, but he isn’t convinced there are enough green flags for his character. And Pete’s red flags? “His general passivity, repressed nature, inability to communicate,” Enoch lists.
