Remember ‘First Kill’? Creator V.E. Schwab Talks Season 2 Plans
Ever wonder what would’ve happened in the Romeo and Juliet-esque complex universe of First Kill, mainly between Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Calliope “Cal” Burns (Imani Lewis)?
We do, too.
Canceled after just one season, the audience never got the answers they deserved. So, when Swooon had the opportunity to interview the creator and writer of the original story, V.E. Schwab, we just had to ask.
Grinning, Schwab replied that she “always” had something planned for Season 2. “I plan everything far in advance,” she said at New York Comic Con. But this wasn’t as obvious as it sounds. Unlike many of Schwab’s other projects, First Kill was initially a short story, Vampires Never Grow Old. “So, really, First Kill as I designed it was only the pilot episode,” she noted. After that, she worked together with a team of writers to keep the story going.
The queer teen vampire-hunter series was often compared to another canceled Netflix show, Fate: The Winx Saga. First Kill amassed a passionate fan base backing it during its short run. Even now, two and a half years after its initial release, people are still begging for it to make a comeback. No one else has given the campy, lesbian vampire niche a try since then.
Still proud of her accomplishments with First Kill, Schwab emphasized the collaborative nature of the show. “It wasn’t ever just me writing it. There was an entire team, and they also had a ton of visions and a ton of ideas, so I’m not actually sure what shape it would’ve taken,” she admitted.
Schwab continued, “It would’ve taken one shape differently if I had written it as a series of novels than as the starting point for TV.”
The author is, however, certain that her fantasies for her creation won’t go to waste. She is also adamant that she won’t tell anyone what her plans for a second season looked like. “I’ll take it to my grave,” she said.
Another option? Perhaps she’ll “find ways to incorporate it into my other books, and you’ll never know,” as she sneakily mentioned.
