As the world bids farewell to 2024, Chicago P.D. star Marina Squerciati has some exciting news to share with her fans. In a December 31 Instagram post, Squerciati revealed, “2024 was a BIG year for me, literally.”

The actress, best known for playing Kim Burgess on the NBC police drama, explained that her huge announcement was why she wasn’t in the first two episodes of Chicago P.D. Season 12 earlier this year.

“I thought I handled being a pregnant working mom with grace—swipe to see my daughter’s very different take,” Squerciati captioned Instagram photos, one of which included the actress showing off her baby bump in a bikini. “PS. THIS was the real reason I wasn’t in the first two episodes of #ChicagoPD, I was having a baby. Have a great NYE, friends!”

Members of her Chicago P.D. family sent their love to the mom-of-two in the comments. LaRoyce Hawkins wrote, “The best to doit love you Burgess.” Tracy Spiridakos added three heart emojis.

Squerciati has kept her pregnancy a secret until now. It’s unclear when she gave birth. She has not announced her baby’s name. This is her second child with husband Eli Kay-Oliphant. Their first child, a daughter, was born in 2017.

After giving birth, Squerciati traveled back to Chicago to film Season 12. The long-running series will return with new episodes on January 8.

In addition to being made a new detective, Burgess is set to walk down the aisle later this season in the highly-anticipated Burzek wedding. Squerciati revealed to TV Insider that showrunner Gwen Sigan is still figuring out the tone of the Burzek nuptials.

“The way Halstead [Jesse Lee Soffer] and Upton [Spiridakos] got married is really tonally appropriate in our show and I think we deserve more for that, for Burzek,” Squerciati said. “So I don’t know how they’re going to do it, but I’m looking forward to it and I just really want to wear a white dress.”
