Exclusive Interview

‘Nobody Wants This’ Star Jackie Tohn on Esther’s Loyalty to Sasha: ‘Morgan Can Take a Hike’ (VIDEO)

Nobody Wants This is about the love story between Noah (Adam Brody) and Joanne (Kristen Bell), but Noah’s abrasive and hilarious sister-in-law Esther (Jackie Tohn) steals every scene she’s in. Esther is not only Noah’s brother’s wife, she’s also his ex’s best friend. For obvious reasons, she is not inclined to like Joanne at first.

In the video above, Tohn makes Esther’s case. “Sasha (Timothy Simons) is brothers with Noah,” she told Swooon.  “Noah was engaged to my very best friend Rebecca (Emily Arlook), and the four of us did everything together. And now there’s like, now that’s broken. Now that’s gone. Like, what about my vacations?” She has a point! We’ve all been there, and it’s only right to take your bestie’s side in the breakup.

Esther is eventually, at least a little, won over by Joanne. Easy to play for Tohn, who’s been friends with Bell for decades.

“Do you ever meet a person and you want to just flick them to the sky because of cuteness? That’s her. For 20 years, I’ve been like, is there a way to punt you into the moon?” Tohn said of her pal.

Judaism is a major part of Nobody Wants This, and Tohn has a history of playing “strong Jewish women” (and iconic ones). She’s played Gilda Radner and Joan Rivers, and her character on Glow had a very moving Passover episode.

Fans of Nobody Wants This have noticed some budding chemistry between Esther’s husband, Sasha, and Joanne’s sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe). Does Tohn want to see that tension explored?

Tohn joked, “No, I do not want Morgan and Sasha to explore that further. I am married to the man and I love him and he loves me, and Morgan can take a hike.” She admitted to seeing what viewers see, however, and called a fan edit that she came across “very cute.” Who amongst us hasn’t been swayed by an excellent fan cam?
