‘Sex and the City’ Alum James Remar Was ‘Surprised’ Samantha & Richard Didn’t End Up Together
Richard Wright (James Remar) was the man to capture Samantha Jones’ (Kim Cattrall) heart before Smith Jerrod on Sex and the City, but Richard’s infidelity put an end to their love story. But could Samantha and Richard have made it work in another life?
Remar weighed in on this exact question at the Dexter: Original Sin premiere on Wednesday (December 11) in New York City. As it turns out, he’s a Samantha and Richard defender. “Of course, they could have [made it work]. I was surprised they didn’t,” he told TV Insider and Swooon.

When broached about the topic of how Samantha and Richard could have been endgame, Remar rolled his eyes and said, “I didn’t write it.”
Remar’s Richard was featured primarily in Season 4 as his romance with Samantha developed. When Samantha caught Richard cheating on her, she ended things. They briefly reunited in Season 5, but when Samantha realized her paranoia about Richard possibly being unfaithful again would drive her crazy, she cut him off for good. “I love you, but I love me more,” Samantha told Richard. An iconic line from an iconic character.
The hotel mogul appeared one last time in the final season when Samantha was questioning her romance with the much younger Smith (Jason Lewis). Samantha and Richard had a brief hookup, which Samantha immediately regretted. After that, Richard was never seen or heard from again.
Remar has had countless notable roles over the years, especially in shows that have a lasting legacy, like Dexter and Sex and the City. “I’m happy, I’m humbled, and I’m very, very grateful,” Remar noted about his career.
