Everything We Know
Is ‘Cruel Intentions’ Coming Back for Season 2? All the Latest Details
The first season of the Cruel Intentions TV series felt like just the beginning. After all the backstabbing, relationship woes, and Greek life drama, Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) and Caroline Merteuil’s (Sarah Catherine Hook) game is far from over.
The 1999 film with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe inspired the Prime Video show. Both projects are modern retellings of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses.
So, will Lucien, Caroline, and the rest of the Manchester College crew return for another semester? Here’s what we know so far.
Will there be a Cruel Intentions Season 2?
Prime Video hasn’t announced whether or not Cruel Intentions has been renewed for Season 2. The show just debuted on November 21.
If the show does get renewed, Season 2 won’t start filming until 2025. A 2026 premiere date for Season 2 would be likely.
Who will return for Season 2?
A second season of Cruel Intentions would most likely feature the returns of the main cast, including Hook and Burgess as Caroline and Lucien, along with Savannah Lee Smith as Annie Grover, Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice Worth, Sara Silva as Cece Carroway, John Harlan Kim as Blaise Powell, Khobe Clarke as Scott Russell, and Sean Patrick Thomas as Professor Chadwick.
Could we see more of the original movie cast in Season 2? Anything’s possible. Selma Blair, who played Cece in the film, admitted she was open to appearing in the series. “Maybe there will be a cameo or something but no, I haven’t been asked anything. I’m excited to see it,” she told Variety.
What will happen in Cruel Intentions Season 2?
The first season begins with Caroline and Lucien striking a deal involving Annie, the Vice President’s daughter. If Lucien succeeds in getting Annie to pledge Delta Phi, Caroline’s sorority, Caroline will allow Lucien to fulfill his desires regarding his stepsister for up to an hour. If he fails, she gets his beloved car.
Over the course of the season, Lucien falls in love with Annie, much to Caroline’s dismay. He calls off his deal with Caroline, who retaliates by releasing Lucien’s private videos of his sexual encounters. One of those sex tapes includes Annie, who believes Lucien leaked the videos. Annie takes Caroline’s side and winds up pledging Delta Phi. However, she begins to realize Caroline isn’t trustworthy when she discovers Caroline stole Cece’s first time story.
Lucien’s revenge against Caroline is by sleeping with her mother, Claudia, whom Caroline has a fractured relationship with. Lucien also films the encounter and uploads it to the shared video album with Caroline, knowing she will see it. Lucien is seen driving his car, wearing Caroline’s cross necklace, and ignoring calls in the final moments of the first season.
“Lucien knows, through and through, the relationship that Caroline has with Claudia, and [this] is to rip her down and to absolutely pull it apart,” Burgess told Swooon.
Co-showrunner Sara Goodman added, “There is nothing more hurtful. By the way, not just to her, but to himself. He’s really destroying himself when he does that, and I think that’s why we love him because there’s this self-destructive part of him I think we all feel for. It’s not just to hurt her, it’s to blow everything up.”
When it comes to Cece, she ends her relationship with Professor Chadwick after sexual abuse allegations are made against him. Turns out, Caroline made the anonymous allegations to ruin Cece’s relationship. As for Blaise, his romance with Scott comes to a screeching halt after Scott discovers Blaise embezzled funds from the fraternity and tried to blackmail his father.
