‘General Hospital’: Jason & Sam’s Final Scene Proved Why They Deserved To Be Endgame

Sam McCall may be gone, but her legacy will live on. At her bedside, the character’s loved ones bid farewell one by one last week on General Hospital. November 1 marked Kelly Monaco‘s last episode after over 20 years on the soap.

But one goodbye stood out among the rest. When Jason (Steve Burton) stepped into Sam’s room and sat at her bedside, he reminisced over two decades of history. When Sam died, she and Jason were not together, but the JaSam love never faded away. In fact, it never felt more alive than it did in Jason’s goodbye.

When he sat at her bedside, Jason stated the obvious: “I figured you would outlive me. You were supposed to.” Jason, a man always one breath away from danger, has managed to evade death time and time again. He’s always been willing to die for the people he loves and would have gladly switched places with Sam.

Jason could barely look at Sam during his final moments with her, her lifeless body a devastating reminder of reality. Instead, he looked across the room and into the past, remembering how brave, compassionate, and stubborn Sam was. “I loved so much about you,” he said. Old footage of their relationship through the years played as Jason continued his farewell.

He recalled how they couldn’t stand each other when they first met. They were the epitome of enemies to lovers. Jason was assigned by Sonny (Maurice Benard) to protect Sam (who was having an affair with Sonny) after she was stabbed. Ever the loyal friend, Jason wanted to protect Sonny and Carly’s relationship, so he urged Sam to end the affair.

When Sam discovered she was pregnant with Sonny’s baby, Jason didn’t abandon her. The baby actually brought them closer together. They were falling in love, even if they didn’t realize it yet. When Sam’s baby died, Jason was the only one to ever hold her. Jason broke the news to Sam that her daughter had died, bonding them together forever by tragedy.

Eventually, these two finally admitted their feeling for each other after a long slow burn. Jason and Sam worked so well because they were always their best selves with each other. They didn’t have to put up any kind of front. They were so naturally perfect for one another. Tragedy, danger, adventure couldn’t tear these two apart. But their life together wasn’t always wrapped up in chaos. Their quieter moments broke down the walls around their hearts. Not only were they in love, they were terrific partners in life.

That montage reinforced what JaSam fans already know: Jason and Sam were meant to be together forever. In the world of soaps, nothing is ever certain. Twists and turns are part of the cycle. But Jason and Sam felt different. This supercouple’s power is still as mighty as it was 20 years ago, a testament to Monaco and Burton’s chemistry.

It’s a shame we didn’t get to see them find their way back to each other. Their love story deserved that, and it will always feel unfinished (unless Monaco returns at some point in the future).

As Jason said, there were so many moments he could only share with her. Even though Sam’s not around anymore, you will never be able to erase their history. “I remember it all. I will never forget. I promise,” Jason said.

JaSam fans will never forget the memories. I still remember. In my eyes, Jason and Sam will always be endgame. As Jason told Sam all those years ago, “You changed me, and I’ll never forget that.” I feel the same way about this supercouple.
