Is ‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ Season 2 Adapting the Book’s Sequel? Ashby Gentry Explains
My Life with the Walter Boys proved to be a massive Netflix success, with many drawing comparisons between the Colorado-set show and Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Both follow the premise of a teenage girl who falls in love with two of her mom’s best friend’s sons, creating that quintessential teen love triangle. But that’s not where all the similarities end, as the two series were both adapted from a novel. However, moving forward, that’s where the two will start to deviate.
My Life with the Walter Boys will no longer use the throughline of author Ali Novak’s work. She will release the sequel to her bestseller in April 2025, but it wasn’t used to guide the story of Season 2. Ashby Gentry, who plays Alex Walter, told Swooon, “It’s completely different. We have no connection to the book any further.” He said exploring this uncharted story territory is exciting because “it’s enjoyable to sort of crack your own, blaze your own trail.”
Toward the end of Season 1, the showrunners started deviating from the novel’s plot. In the series, Alex and Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) didn’t officially call things off before she skipped off to New York for the summer. However, they kept the part of the book in which Jackie and Cole (Noah LaLonde), Alex’s brother, have a steamy makeout sesh.
So, to see what they’ll be doing with all that tension when they return to our TV screens for Season 2 will be quite interesting, especially since it won’t be based on exact source material. Sorry, Walter Boys fans, you won’t be able to spoil by reading the upcoming sequel!
When asked if Gentry had read the newest installment in the Walter Boys series, he stated, “I don’t. I can’t speak for Noah or Nikki, but I have not, and I don’t think either of them have, but I don’t know. I have no clue.”
He was excited to emphasize that the viewers “can expect things to get a little bit more intense, and you can expect characters who changed a lot.”
